War on the Plains (OKC Winter Campaign Event)

January 25, 2009

At the recentĀ  War on the Plains (OKC Winter Campaign Event) Tobias Clark piloted a Brymin deck and interestingly enough he was the only dev to attend just like I was the only dev at the NJ event. However, unlike me he was running a highlander deck and he made it into the 2nd place out of 14 players. Second place is no small accomplishement and to get it with a highlander deck is truly something. So good sir, I tip my hat to you for you have shown us all that the devs are still there and that they are still strong. Best of luck in your future games, keep up the great work. :)

Here is the report on the progress of his matches and his decklist:

Report:

By: Tobias Clark

Woo hoo! Still riding a high from yesterdays fun and successful event. As somebody who likes reading other peoples tournament reports I took notes throughout the games to help me remember all the juicy details.

Rnd 1
I got to start things off right sitting down across from Brian (LordoWar) who came up from Texas with the rest of his crew. He was playing Lady of Pain. After shaking hands we started the bloodshed which was our first game. My dice were red hot the first game and hit his Amatria’s then helped Brymin chew through his Kinnel’s as well. Brymin drew a camel and Cardinal Scelus to get her to the front. After Killing the last rank holder I got a Bear’s Soul which enabled me to get a 3rd and final wound on the Lady of Pain for a turn 1 victory.
Game 2 wasn’t quite as blitzy for me but Brymin did get a Rellion Truebred which enabled me to take out the Lady a second time on turn 2 with a lucky high dice roll against the Lady of Pain on my 2nd strike after inflicting a double wounder with my first.
Me a happy 2-0 rnd 1 weiner.

Rnd 2
This time I got to play against Vicky (DameDrache) an OKC local who was also playing the Lady of Pain. My luck started fading with a lot more even back and forth with the bloodletting on both sides of the battlefield. Validan was my allstar for our first game leading the way to victory with a killing blow against the Lady in the 3rd turn. Our 2nd game proved equally lengthy though I was in a superior board position throughout. I drew my Wish on the 3rd turn and didn’t need it but I ripped it to search for something anyway just because I could and that’s how I roll. Aurelius proved to be the bread winner for me bringing Brymin the Lady’s head after killing her with a nat 20. Vicky was very gracious and congratulatory and we spent the rest of the rnd scoping out our competition and hoping she would still have a good shot at the top despite her loss. Sucks having to eliminate a fellow local player but alas there can be only one.
Me a still euforious weiner with another 2-0

Rnd 3
I had the pleasure of shaking hands with Gene (GeneK) who was able to make it down from Kansas. Gene was playing one of the match ups I’d been dreading. Krenthor Gouge. My luck for the day completely abandoned me our first game. I lost on the first action when Krenthor Power attacked for a very gruesome end to Brymin. Our 2nd game went a little better with me drawing a DragonBuckler for Brymin. I won the ALL important initiative roll on the 2nd turn for a win with my 2nd strike against Krenthor. Game 3 was just as bloody and quick as our first 2 games with another game determined by the winner of initiative. Turn 2 I lucked out again and was able to kill Krenthor thanks to the power of Wyvern’s Gem. Gene and I then talked about how the Kansas warlord scene is going and the perils of working with a Dial-up connection.
Me a very nervous and still incredulous 2-1 weiner.

Rnd 4
I was paired up with Paul (Nihilistikism) another of the Texans who was playing Sigurdur. After a truly epic game that went on for almost the full 45 minutes Paul finally landed the kill shot on Brymin after Grimur reacted to my wounding Helt Royalwarden. Jeremiah came up right after the my loss of our first and of course only game to announce that time had been called. I congratulated Paul on his well desereved and hard earned victory and loudly cursed myself for making such a stupid move as wounding Helt when Grimur was there on the table clearly waiting for me. Oh well the shoe had to drop sometime right? Was still easily the most fun game of Warlord I played all day.
Me a bittersweet feeling 0-1 loser.

Jeremiah then took a brief break to get the standings and then announced the top 4. I recieved what I considered a well deserved Top Dev medal despite the fact that I had no competition for the honors. I had made top 2 in standings out of 14 with a Highlander deck people! Next came the playoffs.

Rnd 5
I got to face my 3rd Texan of the day Jeremy (Hedge) who as I was expecting was playing Set’ rokh. Jeremy and I exchanged some furious bloodshed our first game with Set’ rokh having to play the same game Brymin has been playing all day and coming up to the front to do the dirty work herself. I was able to work in a final 3rd wound on Set’ rokh after using Once Again to return a Thrust to my hand. Our 2nd game proceeded to play out over the rest of the 45 minutes we had to play. Time restraints required that we didn’t get to finish our 2nd game to ensure we could get started on the following Anceints tournament. So I spueaked into the top again despite what was looking like would be a loss for me in our 2nd game.
A guilty feeling 1-0 winner.

6th and final Rnd.
I played against Paul and his undefeated Sigurdur again to determine who would win it all and who would come in second best. Neither of the 2 games we played had any of the magic of the back and forth exchange we had in our Rnd 4 game. I might have had some chances during our 2nd game but I don’t think I was ever in a strong position during either game. The multiwounding on his end and the cold dice and lack of multiwounding on my end resulted in Paul proving the victor. Congratulations Paul! May your hero be mighty and fun to play!
A still proud but saddened 0-2 loser but overall 2nd placer. Go Brymin! ::High Fives his very successful Warlord::
